Voortrekker Monument

Voortrekker Monument

The Voortrekker Monument is an important memorial for Afrikanerdom, commemorating the white pioneers descended from the first Dutch settlers on the Cape, who made the “Great Trek” into the interior in the 1800s. But its interpretation has changed with the creation of the adjacent Freedom Park, so now the trek has been incorporated into the larger story of modern South Africa’s liberation.
