Johannesburg’s art scene is growing and changing every day, but here are a few essential stops
One of South Africa’s most prestigious contemporary art galleries, with exhibits that become national talking points. The gallery is in Parkwood, but close to both the Rosebank Mall and the Rosebank Gautrain Station. They also have a smaller space at Arts on Main.
Circa on Jellicoe Multimedia Art Gallery
Across the street from Goodman is Everard Read’s new Circa, worth a visit for the architecture as much as the art. Climb to the top to enjoy the view and lounge in a deep leather chair.
Art on Paper
Regular exhibits by leading South African artists, inside the 44 Stanley complex. Buy originals, or browse through their vast selection of more affordable prints.
Arts on Main
This old warehouse complex has become home to top artists and galleries. Many Joburg art galleries with main homes elsewhere in the city also have space here. Arts on Main was the first bright spot in the Maboneng Precinct on the city’s East End, which hosts a popular Sunday market and an ever-expanding range of shops and cafes.
