The Southern Sun North Beach is two hotels — the Elangeni and the Maharani — merged into one operation but still rather bizarrely separated by an apartment block. Story goes that the hotel wanted to take over the apartment block, or at least create a bridge through it, but the price rather unsurprisingly shot up once the apartment building understood the plan.
The location is superb if you’re interested in exploring Durban proper, as opposed to the tony resorts farther north around Gateway and Umhlanga. Zulu rickshaws pass by in front for a picturesque, if 19th century way of getting down to uShaka or up to the stadium.
The real selling point, though, is the rooftop pool. Even though the water around Durban is warm enough to swim at the beach year-round, it’s also nice to take a break by the pool and enjoy a coffee or a cocktail with a panoramic view of the city.
