The Praça 25 de Junho in Maputo turns into an open-air bazaar every Saturday morning. Mixed in among the tourist fare you’ll find bone jewelry, cowry shell baskets, wood carvings like the Makonde masks and wooden furniture.
Definitely wear your bargaining cap, as prices are extremely elastic. The plaza’s not big enough to make a whole morning of the market, but it’s near the Fortress and the Museo de Monea, so the shopping can be a part of a morning exploring the city.
Get there early. The heat gets intense by midday.
