In as much as Harare gets into fine dining, Victoria Twenty-two sets the standard. That’s not meant as a slight — the food and service are top-notch. But even with the refined white-tablecloth service, some people still rock up in shorts and flip-flops.
Like so many of the city’s gems, this restaurant is housed in an old house gloriously restored with an expansive and established garden in Newlands. The menu is firmly rooted in the southern African tradition of applying the techniques of Mediterranean cooking to local ingredients. There’s usually a game special, if you haven’t yet sampled springbok or kudu. It’s Italian-style service, with pastas offered as a separate course. The full four-course meal is generous and delicious, and the garden invites lingering late into the evening.
Victoria Twenty-two is also a fantastic place for watching Harare’s privileged classes unwind. Western diplomats, Chinese businessmen and the political elite can all be found at tables ordering South African wines.
